Nushrat Bushra is a senior majoring in psychology at The City College of New York. She has been interested in the art world. She is currently being inspired by the world around her; consequently, she plans to use it in her future career as a therapist/psychologist.

This interview has been edited for clarity and brevity.

What inspired you to start drawing?

Since I am originally from Bangladesh, in kindergarten, I had to take a drawing course every year when I was younger. That really sparked the start of my journey. I also find it very therapeutic and have found that drawing makes me happy and relieves my anxiety and stress.

Are you currently inspired by any particular artist, artistic movements, or even things outside of art?

I don’t follow any artists or any particular art styles; most of my work is freestyle. I try to find everything inspiring, whether it's my own art or something I saw on YouTube, Instagram reels, or pictures. I just try to draw as much as possible. I like art that involves any psychological thinking, any art that requires really thinking and reflecting. That really inspires me.

What are your future career plans or artistic plans?

Since I am majoring in psychology, I would like to incorporate art into my future career as an aspiring psychologist. For example, having art therapy in my sessions would be very helpful to me. We would draw based on my clients' lived experiences. This would be therapeutic for both me and my future clients. And as a personal career goal, I would just like to continue drawing.

How do you describe your artistic style? How would you say your drawing style or technique evolved over time?

My style would be freestyle. I like to draw anything that inspires me at the moment, whether it's geometric shapes, flower designs, or any sunsets. Over time, I can see from my work that my technique has improved. Each time I draw, I try to make my technique more precise and minimize any kind of distraction from the art.

Can you describe your creative process from idea to finished piece?

First, I try to visualize the finished product; then I start to make an outline. Then I try to build up on that. I don’t have a specific process because I like pieces to come out as organically as possible. I just continue to trust the process.

What advice would you give to someone who just started out with drawing?

I would say just go with the process. Sometimes the art will not be as perfect as you think, but I feel like trusting the process and practicing your skill every day is very important for your growth as an artist.
